October 2009
Otsego Lake
October is the month for live bait. The bigger the shiner minnows used for bait, the bigger the fish you catch on Otsego lake. Thirty fish days are not uncommon with the smallmouth bass weighing between 3 and almost 5 pounds, however, we have yet to see that smallmouth bass tipping the scales over 4 lbs. 13 oz.
That big five pounder is out there somewhere! As always, the smallmouth bass fishing in Otsego has been spectacular this month. In our ten trips taken on Otsego Lake this month, we boated well over 300 smallmouth bass - all released unharmed! Late October saw more lake trout being caught. On October 30th we boated seven big lake trout. Five of the seven were over 6 pounds and two were over 8 pounds - all taken on live bait in shallow water. Only two largemouth bass were taken this month. As the water temperature drops the largemouth become sluggish and go off the feed.
The occasional big walleye has also bitten while fishing for smallmouth bass.
Canadarago Lake
The fishing on Otsego Lake was so spectacular this October, we did not fish Canadarago Lake at all.
September 2009
Otsego Lake
September saw the largemouth bite start to dwindle with smallmouth bass beginning to become the predominant catch as the days progressed towards October. Some big perch are beginning to show up. Medium sized fathead
minnows will catch you a cooler full of big perch on Otsego in late September
in about 15 feet of water. Look for the schools on your fish finder. Live bait
has started to produce better catches of smallmouth bass than artificial lures.
Live crayfish and medium shiners along with big fathead minnows will get you some nice smallmouth in late September. Fish those live crayfish REAL
slowly on the bottom!!
Canadarago Lake
Walleye are still biting early in the morning on Canadarago. Don't expect many fish but you can still get two or three nice fish if you get up early enough and fish the weed edges in 15 to 20 feet of water. You can catch a lot of largemouth bass, but many are sub-legal fish and the legal ones aren't too big. We are wondering where those big largemouth have gone? We're looking foward to seeing those big smallmouth start biting in October.
August 2009
Otsego Lake
The first week of August was still good for surface smallmouth action real early
in the morning. The rest of the month saw many 2 to 3 pound largemouth biting in the shallows on the edge of most weed beds. The occasional walleye and smallmouth could be taken while largemouth fishing by jigging just off the shallow weed beds in 10 to 15 feet of water. This August was one of the best
ones I've seen for consistently taking big smallmouth bass on Otsego Lake.
Canadarago Lake
Canadarago continued to produce a good walleye bite early in the morning
during August. Good size largemouth bass also have moved into the shallow water and can be taken in the morning on various rubber artificial lures. Fish slow and quietly.
July
2009
Otsego
Lake
The
first three weeks of July continues the great
smallmouth bite with plenty of fish up to 4
pounds hitting surface plugs up to about 8:00
AM and then hitting live bait for the rest
of the day. We've also had plenty of
large perch in the 10 to 14 inch range also
hitting live bait in 10 to 20 feet of water. The
largemouth have just moved into the shallows
and the first big largemouth bite happened
on July 21st. We should see a continued
consistent largemouth bite for the rest of
the summer in the shallows with the smallmouth
bite tapering off as they start moving into
deeper water.
Canadarago
Lake
The
first two weeks of July has been good for consistent
catches of decent walleye up to four pounds
with only one fish under 15 inches and 3 to
five fish mornings pretty common. Drift
fishing in 15 to 20 feet of water off certain
productive spots has been the key with our
secret walleye lure. We've also been
picking up some decent largemouth bass in 20
feet of water - the best weighed in at 4.5
pounds
June
2009
Otsego
Lake
This
June has been one of the best for catching
smallmouth bass consistently.
Fishing
in the shallows with artificial lures during
the first three weeks of June produced spectacular
catches of smallmouths up to 3.5 pounds. All
these fish were immediately released. The
last week of June we switched to live bait
and continued with a great smallmouth bite
in 10 to 20 feet of water. The smallmouth
bass fishing was so spectacular we ignored
all other species on Otsego lake in June!
Canadarago
Lake
June
was one of the best months we can remember
for catching big "jack" perch on
Canadarago Lake. You could "sight" fish
them consistently in 5 to 7 feet of water with
small jigs. One morning produced about
40 fish in two hours.
We kept
the biggest ones for a great fish fry. Only
a few walleyes were caught.
May
2009
We
did not fish Otsego or Canadarago Lake in May. One
week of May was spent in northern Quebec with
a great bunch of 8 guys fishing for walleye
and northern pike. Make sure to check
out the May pictures on the "Wall of Fame".
The
rest of May was spent fly fishing the local
streams - specifically the Beaverkill, Willowemoc,
Neversink, and East and West Branches of the
Delaware River. A 'Light Hendrickson" parachute
dry fly in size 14 accounted for the most trout
- all browns - many over 18 inches! Two
of my lucky customers got to see this spectacular
fishing at its best this year. The monster
of all trout was a 28 inch beauty taken on
that #14 fly on the West Branch of the Delaware. The
fish weighed in at 7 pounds. Check it
out on the "Wall of Fame". If
I had my choice in May I would fly fish every
day on the West Branch of the Delaware! I
won't tell you the best pools unless you come
fishing with me next May - Sorry! Call
now to book next May's fly fishing guided trips
on the West Branch of the Delaware. No
drift boat - just a long hike and wading for
some of the biggest trout you'll ever take
on a dry fly.

Fishing Reports
October & November
2008:
October
and November are the months for big smallmouth
and this October was no exception. We
have seen many fish caught weighing in
around 3 pounds and four fish have tipped
the scales at just over 4 pounds. Some
lake trout and walleye are showing up every
now and then among the smallmouth. Live
bait is king.
September
2008:
During
the first two weeks of September largemouth
bass were still being taken on every trip
in good numbers, but by mid-month the smallmouth
bass had taken over again with good size
fish hitting live bait consistently in
20 feet of water. The great smallmouth
bite continued through the end of September.
August
2008:
August
saw lots of largemouth bass being taken
on Otsego lake with the average fish weighing
in from 2 to 3 pounds. Early August
was a good time to catch walleyes on Canadarago
also. The walleyes we caught in
August were bigger than the July fish on
average but they all tasted delicious.
July
2008:
The
great smallmouth bite on Otsego Lake continued
through the first week of July and then
slowed down some but the largemouth bass
started to bite real well off the weed
beds and structure so there was no lack
of action. There was some good walleye
action on both lakes in early June for
fish averaging around 3 pounds.
June
2008:
This
has been the best June the “Reel
Men” can remember for taking big
smallmouth bass on Otsego Lake. The
bite has been spectacular for fish averaging
about 3 pounds. We caught well over
200 smallmouth during the first two weeks
of June and all were immediately released
unharmed.
In
mid-June “Reel Men” Tom, Eric, & Andrew
took off to Lake Huron for a four day fishing
trip. Check out the Bass, walleye,
and Pike we caught on the “Wall of
Fame”. The last two weeks of
June saw the great smallmouth bite continue
on Otsego Lake. The early morning
surface bite was awesome. We also
landed some big largemouth and smallmouth
on Canadarago Lake during the last week
of June.
May
2008:
The “Reel
Men” again took a great bunch of
guys to Quebec on their annual pike and
walleye trip. There were no forest
fires this year and the weather was cold
and rainy, but the fishing was spectacular. Our
party of six caught 983 fish in six days. Denny
had the biggest pike at 11 pounds and Tom
caught the biggest Walleye at 8 pounds. Vic
caught the most fish. (over 200)
2007
Fishing Reports
October & November
2007:
The
big smallmouth have started their autumn
feeding spree. They have moved into
10 to 20 feet of water and are biting pretty
consistently. We’ve seen a
few nice fish over four pounds. That
five pound smallmouth still eludes all
of us. A few nice lake trout have
been taken in the shallows also.
September
2007:
September
saw a pretty even mix of largemouth and
smallmouth bass being taken. The
size of the largemouth started to decline
but the numbers caught were still impressive. The
smallmouth bite started, but the real big
fish haven’t showed up yet.
August
2007:
August
was the best fishing so far this summer
for jumbo largemouth bass. Our “secret” lure
scored big and our clients had many days
where they caught over 20 largemouth bass – mostly
off the deep weed beds on both lakes. We
saw a good number of fish over 5 pounds. Over
200 largemouth bass were taken in the month
of August. All were released in good
shape.
July
2007:
Early
July saw the walleyes bite real well on
Canadarago Lake in about 15 feet of water. Then
by the second week of July the big largemouth
bass started to bite in earnest on both
lakes. Over a hundred largemouth
were caught and released from our two boats
during the last three weeks in July.
June
2007
“Reel
Man” Tom and son Andrew traveled
to Tennessee for some striper, catfish
and trout fishing. Captain AJ took
us out for two days on two different TVA
reservoirs and we caught some real nice
stripers, hybrids, and catfish. Andrew
scored the big fish with a 20 pound striper
and 11 pound blue catfish. Tom nailed
a 10 pound hybrid. Later in the week
we fished with trout guide Jason Reep and
fished in the Great Smokey Mountains in
eastern Tennessee. We fished one
of the tailwater streams in a drift boat
and caught and released over 40 trout in
a day’s fishing. The biggest
was a 17 inch rainbow.
The
last week of June was still a great time
for smallmouth on both Otsego and Canadarago
Lakes. The largemouth also started
hitting rubber worms in the shallows on
both lakes.
May
2007
Eight
guys caught hundreds of fish in five days
of fishing. Ken caught the biggest
fish of the trip – a 12 pound monster
pike. Our trip was cut short by
one day when the largest forest fire in
Quebec history forced our evacuation!

Fishing Reports
October
2006:
10/3/06 – Ed
and his step-dad fished Otsego Lake for about
7 hours and had one of the best days fishing
ever. They caught largemouth, smallmouth,
pickerel, sunfish, perch, rock bass, lake trout,
and landlocked salmon. The lake trout
was 6 lbs. and the salmon was 7 lb. There
were some real big smallmouth, too. Over
30 fish were caught in all.
10/8/06 “Reel Men” fished
the Cross Lake tournament. Four big smallmouth
were brought to the weigh-in and one largemouth. Tom
caught a 5 lb. freshwater drum and David caught
a huge 14 lb. freshwater drum. Vic also
caught the big smallmouth of the tournament,
a 3.99 lb beauty. That huge drum was
the biggest one anyone had ever seen. It
was still 10 pounds shy of the state record. Check
out Dave’s and Vic’s picture on
the “Wall of Fame” for October
1 – 9.
10/13/06 – Dick, Ray,
and Tom fished Otsego Lake for about 6 hours
and caught a whole mess of big smallmouth bass. The
day started slow but picked up as the smallies
started hitting live bait on the west side
of the lake around noon. Well over 20 fish
were caught. Check out Dick and Ray with
their big Smallies on the “Wall of Fame” for
October 10 – 31.
10/19/06 - Rob & Tom caught
a pile of big fish on Otsego Lake this morning. Rob
caught many pickerel and largemouth and Tom
caught all the smallmouth. Thirteen fish
were caught in all.
10/22/06 – “Reel
Men” fished the Otsego Lake Tournament
and caught 16 smallmouth and largemouth bass. They
brought 4 smallmouth and one largemouth bass
to the weigh-in and their total weight was
14.01 pounds. Unfortunately seven other
pros had a better day slamming big smallmouth. There
were two 5 pound bags over 17 pounds each. The
biggest smallmouth of the year was caught and
weighed in at 4.66 pounds. This was the
biggest smallmouth ever caught at a tournament
in the history of the club.
September
2006:
9/9/06 – “Reel
Men” fished day one of the Otsego Lake
Tournament placing fourth overall for the day
with a total catch of over 11 pounds. The “Reel
Men” caught 18 total bass, but couldn’t
get that “lunker” fish. The
biggest fish they caught was just over 3 lbs.
9/10/06 – “Reel
Men” fished day two of the tournament
on Canadarago Lake and placed third for the
day. They brought 5 fish in to the weigh-in
totaling over 12 pounds, which gave them a
two-day total of over 23 pounds. That
was good enough for a second place overall
finish in the two day tournament. The “Reel
Men” caught 13 total fish this second
day with a 4.01 lb. largemouth and a 3.25 lb.
smallmouth.
9/21/06 – Two guys fished
Otsego Lake for 6 hours and caught both largemouth & smallmouth
bass. Total bass caught was 12 and the
biggest one was a smallmouth weighing just
a shade under 4 lbs.
9/29/06 – Both ”Reel
Men”, and Craig from Florida fished Otsego
Lake for 6 hours and caught a whole net full
of fish. (See the full net picture on the “Wall
of Fame”.) There was a total of 29 bass
caught and many were over 3 pounds. Most
of the fish were smallmouth. One huge 4 lb.
pickerel was also caught by “Reel man” Tom. “Reel
Man” Eric out fished the two older men
by a two to one margin. Must have been
the younger reflexes he used to set the hook
faster. It was a great day of fishing.
9/30/06 – Joe and his
3 friends from New York City fished Otsego
Lake for 5 hours and caught a whole mess of
big fish. Two huge smallmouth bass were
caught by these guys, one was 4 lb. 2 oz. and
one was 4 lb. 12 oz. This second smallmouth
was the biggest one the “Reel Men” have
ever seen landed on Otsego Lake in over 30
years of fishing the lake. These guys
boated over 30 bass during this trip. Our
best day so far in 2006.
9/30/06 – Craig from
Florida & “Reel Man” Tom fished
the afternoon bite on Otsego Lake and boated
another 9 fish – all smallmouth bass. They
were all good fish weighing over 2 lbs. The
biggest was well over 3 lbs.
August
2006:
8/2/06 – The
oldest of the “Reel Men” fished
Otsego Lake with his youngest son for largemouth
for four hours and caught 12 good fish including
two 4 lb. bass, which his son caught.
8/5/06 – Both “Reel
Men” fished Canadarago Lake in the morning
and caught a few good largemouth and “slammed” many
good sized smallmouth. The smallmouth
averaged over 3 pounds each and we caught nine
of them.
8/8/06 – Three anglers
fished Otsego Lake for 5 hours and caught a
mess of nice largemouth bass. They all
averaged about 2 pounds and there were no real “lunkers”,
but we caught 14 fish overall.
8/11/06 – Three fishermen
from Texas fished Otsego Lake for six hours. The
youngest fisherman was 5 years old and he caught
the biggest fish – a smallmouth bass
weighing in at almost 4 pounds. His dad
and grandfather also caught some good fish – both
largemouth and smallmouth. Together they
caught over 25 fish. These guys were
good fishermen.
8/13/06 – Three fishermen
fished Otsego Lake for 4 hours. They
caught 4 largemouth, 3 rock bass, and one perch. They
all tried hard – but the fish weren’t
cooperating very well today.
8/18/06 – Two fishermen
fished Canadarago Lake for 6 hours and caught
4 big smallmouth and 5 nice largemouth. The
biggest fish was a largemouth weighing 4 lbs.
6 oz.
8/19/06 – Two fishermen
fished Canadarago Lake for three hours and
caught 2 big perch, 1 sunfish, and a big largemouth
bass and a big smallmouth bass. Both
bass weighed about 3 lbs.
8/20/06 – The “Reel
Men” fished the Canadarago Lake Bass
Tournament sponsored by the “Susquehanna
Bass Association” and placed second with
a weight of 11.68 lbs. The “Reel Men” team
caught a total of 4 legal bass during the 8
hour tournament and “Reel Men” Tom
got a 4.31 lb. largemouth bass which was the
second biggest fish of the tournament. Chris
caught the biggest fish of the tournament with
a largemouth weighing 5.50 pounds. Joe caught
the biggest smallmouth weighing 4.00 lbs. It
was a tough day fishing with a cold front coming
in. Only two teams out of 22 brought
in a five fish limit.
8/22/06 – A father-son
duo from Chicago fished Otsego Lake and caught
a mess of good fish including one big pickerel,
perch, rock bass, and a good number of largemouth
bass. Their total fish count was 16,
eight of which were largemouth bass averaging
around 2 pounds. Not a bad half-day fishing.
8/25/06 – The same father
with his two sons, all from Chicago, fished
Otsego Lake for the second time this week. The
fishing was a little slower but still good. Only
nine fish were caught but they were all good
largemouth bass and the average size was a
little bigger than the ones caught on Tuesday,
with the biggest fish weighing just under 4
lbs.
8/29/06 – One good Texas
fisherman and his “Reel Men” guide
fished Otsego Lake for largemouth bass. This
guy from Texas was a real good bass fisherman
and he out-fished his guide by a couple of
fish by “Texas-rigging” as opposed
to wacky rigging our favorite artificial bait. A
total of 13 bass were caught and two of them
were about 4 pounds. Another real good
half-day fishing!
July
2006:
7/3/06 – Five
anglers fished the east side of Otsego Lake
for 4 hours and caught 18 good size largemouth
bass. The biggest bass was just over
4 lbs.

fished Otsego Lake with the “Reel Men” and
caught four good sized largemouth bass along
with many rock bass. The big bass of
the day weighed in at 4 lbs. 1 oz.
7/18/06 – two anglers
fished Otsego Lake for largemouth bass for
five hours and caught many fish. The
fish averaged about 2 pounds each. One
4 lb. fish took a “wacky” rigged
worm under a willow tree. It was the
big fish of the trip.
7/25/06 – Two fishermen
fished Otsego Lake four 4 hours and caught
many fish. The big fish of the trip was
a 12 pound carp. We also caught big perch,
rock bass, two big small mouth bass, and three
nice largemouth bass. The biggest bass
was a smallmouth weighing 3 lbs. 10 oz.
7/28/06 – Two fisherman
fished Otsego Lake four six hours and caught
16 bass using rubber worms. They were
all largemouth bass and the largest weighed
in at 4 lbs. 8 oz. Every bass was over
12 inches long!
7/31/06 – Four good fishermen
from Texas fished Otsego Lake for four hours
and caught a mess of good bass. Perch
and rock bass were also caught. The big
fish of the trip was caught by the youngest
angler. That fish was a largemouth weighing
in at 4 lbs 2 oz.
June
2006:
6/17/06 – Bass

countless pickerel. Many trout and salmon
followed our lures to the boat however only
one small brown trout was caught.
5/28/06
5 anglers
fished Otsego Lake for five hours and caught
many pickerel. While fishing for pickerel
with wire leaders a few good bass were also
caught. All bass were released immediately. Pickerel
were also released.
